WFP brandingNedbank brandingMost corporate businesses recognise the need to actively support impoverished communities and that they have the means to make a difference.

There is often a synergy between the aims of a responsible company and the aims of the Hippo Water Roller project.

To encourage corporate sponsorship and to enhance the win-win phenomenon, the Hippo roller can be branded in a number of ways. These include colour coding of the drum and screw cap, adding advertising banners to the handle and blending logos onto the screw cap.

  • Supporters
    • Nelson-Mandela-with-hippo-w Former Pres. Nelson Mandela (photo, right) - Nobel Peace Prize Winner expressed his support for the Hippo Water Roller:
“A personal appeal is made to your organization to actively support a national project which will positively change the lives of millions of our fellow South Africans.”

We were privileged to meet Mr. Nelson Mandela on two occasions and to gain his endorsement and support for the Hippo roller.

"The generosity of nature creates inspiration for beauty. We can follow its example in creating beauty through generosity. I chose to support the Hippo Water Roller program as it is such an effective way to improve the African people’s quality of life."

Green Machines is an exhibition in Dublin, Ireland that features the Hippo Water Roller. The exhibition is held by the Science Gallery and explores the potential of green technology and sustainable design to revolutionise our world.

Emily Pilloton, an active supporter of the Hippo Water Roller, conducted a fundraising campaign and then travelled to South Africa to personally hand them out. Emily often refers to the roller in her presentations and features the Hippo Water Roller in her book: “Design Revolution – 100 Products that are changing people’s lives."

Engineers Without Borders combined their talents and efforts to redesign the Hippo roller for improved shipping efficiency. The objective is to ship more rollers to other countries more cost effectively.

  • NGO's

The activities of many NGO’s, operating in rural communities, are often frustrated and constrained in their effectiveness due to a lack of water. Numerous NGO’s are finding the appropriate technology of the Hipporoller very valuable in supporting the aims and objectives of their own organisation.

Some NGO’s using Hippo Water Rollers include:

  • Recognition
We give recognition to the following partners and supporters of the project:

InfoTech 'Infotech', an information technology company based in Pretoria, was instrumental during the early development phases of the 'Hippo Water Roller'.

Funding in excess of ZAR1 million was provided for research and development.  This process of development and prototyping contributed to the Hippo roller being what it is today, a robust and purpose-built unit that can survive the difficult circumstances and terrain that is often associated with its development.
The Hippo roller was awarded the “Design for Development” award in 1997. The institute regularly uses the roller in exhibitions around the world.
